On November 14, 1995, a Baijing bus was pulling out of Yaun-ming-yaun bus terminal at midnight and headed towards Xiang-shan (Fragrant Hill). It was a cold and windy night. The only people on board were the driver and female conductor.

They made a stop at the South Gate of the Summer Palace. It was an elderly woman, a young man, and a nice couple. The couple sat behind the driver while the elderly woman and young man sat near the doors. Everything was uneventful for a time.

Then the driver saw some people waving on the side of the road. He pulled over and let three men on. One was being carried by the two others. His head was bent and no one could see his face. The other two were pale, almost deathly so. They were dressed in a style popular in the Qing Dynasty. The three men sat in the back.

The other passengers became uneasy. They kept looking back, scared. The female conductor tried to calm them down. She said that the men must be working on a movie nearby, got drunk at a party, and forgot to change clothes.

Soon, the couple reached their destination. They quickly got off. The bus moved on in an eerie sikance. All you could hear was the wind whistling threw cracks in the windows.

Suddenly, the old woman began making a commotion, saying how the young man had stolen her purse. No matter how much he tried to deny it, she wouldn’t let up. She convinced the driver to pull over so she could take the young man to the police. She dragged the dumbfounded man off the bus and thy watched it leave.

“So, where is the police station?” the young man asked.

“There is no police station,” said the old woman. “I just saved your life!”

“What? How?” The young man was completely confused now.

The oldwomn explained, “I had my suspicions about those three ever since they got on the bus. I kept looking back at them and saw it all. The wind blew through the window and lifted their long robes. I saw that they had no legs! They were ghosts!”

The young man began sweating, realizing how close he had been to the dead. He couldn’t speak. The old woman called the police and told them everything.

The next day, Bus 375 never reported in. The bus, its driver, and the female conductor all vanished. Police looked all across the city, but couldn’t find it anywhere. They interviewed the elderly woman and young man. However, their story about ghosts was dismissed. The police thought the two were mentally ill.

Two days later, Bus 375 was found submerged in the Miyun Reservoir. This was nearly 100km (a little more than 62 miles) from Fragrant Hill. Inside were the three badly decomposed bodies of the driver, the female conductor, and an unidentified man.

Three thing stuck out:

  1. The bus didn’t have enough gas to go to Miyun Reservoir. When police checked the gas tank, they found it filled with blood.
  2. It had only been two days since the bus was reported missing, yet all the bodies were badly decomposed. Even in Summer, there was no way for the bodies to look that bad. An autopsy showed no tampering of the bodies. So, how had decomposition happen so quickly?
  3. The police took a look at all security cameras leading up to Miyun Reservoir, and the bus never appeared on any of them. In fact, there was nothing out of the ordinary at all. So, how had this uge bus go unnoticed?

It is still a mystery to this day.
